Court Four (2009)
C-type print, audio
Photographer: John Loman

Composite image of a Squash court photographed from the T* position. The back and side walls were taken when the motion activated lights cut out, the front wall shot with the hanging fluorescent lights on. The photograph was then washed until the image gradually vanished into indistinguishable marks. T-shirts with the image were also produced and deposited into a textile recycling bank.

Like a kind of palimpsest, I became fascinated by the periodical washing of the court walls which muted all the previous marks until fresh marks began to appear and a new pattern of activity would build.

*The intersection of the red lines near the centre of the court where the player is in the best position to retrieve the opponent’s next shot.

The audio is a field recording of a warm-up session taken on the same court.
